Wargame: AirLand Battle- Additional Decks: Rhodesia
Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe, was briefly independent from 1965-1979. During this time, they fought a very successful war against Soviet-backed communist guerrillas under Robert Mugabe, and others. While the Rhodesians arguably won the war on the battlefield, they lost it politically, and were forced to hand control over to Mugabe’s ZANU-PF faction.
However, in the event of a war between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, it is likely the British and Americans, despite their image of Rhodesia as a rabble-rousing white-minority state, would have lifted their embargo on arms in an attempt to further disrupt Soviet activities globally. Set in 1990, Rhodesia has since slowly done away with it’s white-minority government in exchange for arms and funding to continue their war against the aging Robert Mugabe’s rebels, tying up the Warsaw Pact’s interests in southern Africa,. When Pact forces pushed against Scandinavia, Rhodesia, while not a NATO member, was asked to contribute forces to the war effort. However, as the Security Forces lacked effective anti-air, armour, and aircraft, it was up to the French and British to supply them once they arrived in Europe. With their more effective assets tied up on the frontline, the Rhodesians had to make do with older, surplus vehicles, and what they brought with them.
Gameplay wise, the Rhodesians lack options when it comes to tanks, air defense, and aircraft. They make up for it with arguably the best infantry and recon in the game, and are spoiled for choice in those categories. What vehicles they do have are lightly armoured, but fast and somewhat numerous, allowing them to match up with Pact armour decks if given the element of surprise. Aircraft are primarily French and expensive, but some older, cheaper models like the Hawker Hunter are capable of light ground attack.
